19th Deaflympic Games Rome 2001 Official Results Book,
Rule Violation and 556 Mistakes
There is another
immense and historical project collapse done by the Lovett-led
CISS adminstration. There are other new acts of rule violation, professional
negligence, incompetent leadership and inept supervision by John Lovett
and Donalda Ammons. The two, as you know, are the defendants in my
still ongoing lawsuit case. This lawsuit, which also has a third defendant
named Jerald Jordan, is based, let me reiterate, on seven different
charges: defamation of character, conspiracy, discrimination, breach
of contract, breach of trust, rule violations and invasion of privacy.
What went wrong lately and what kind of a project am I talking about?
Let me elaborate further.
I have just received a copy of the book titled 19th Deaflympic Games
Rome 2001 Official Results 22th July - 1th August ( cost $20.00 ). Hopefully,
by now, every National Sports Association - member of the CISS has already
received this publication copy.
That forewordless and numberlessly-paged book was jointly produced by
the CISS and the FISS ( the Italian Sports Federation of the Deaf ).
That publication, to much dismay of the many, was very belatedly released
to the world. I use the words "very belatedly" because, according
to the Deaflympic Games Rule 20 P., such a book was supposed to be
ready to distribute by November 1, 2001, i.e., exactly three months
after the end of the XIXth Deaflympic Summer Games held in Rome, Italy.
( The Rule 20 P. states the following: a complete result book of the
Deaflympic Games shall be produced within three months following the
completion of the Deaflympic Games. The result book shall contain results
attained in all heats and the final results, arranged at sport and classification
level appropriate for inclusion in Deaflympic Record list ).
Now, you clearly know as to what kind of a new rule violation the Lovett-administered
CISS committed.
Let now focus on the key item of this ongoing material of mine, which
will steadfastly prove of the continually and embarassingly genuine
ineptness, incompetence and unprofessionalism of the two current CISS
administrators - Lovett and Ammons. Both of them, in spite of the violation
of the Deaflympic Games Rule 20 P., undoubtedly had ample time in preparing
and supervising the book project.
As a long-time, dedicated and diligent researcher and historian of
the CISS and Deaflympic Games, I was truly pained to discover over
556 errors, inconsistencies, name misspellings and questionable facts
in the book, which, by my own count, has 208 pages in it.
To get an idea as to what went wrong inside the book, let me, on a random
basis, present to you ten different examples:
1. Medal Count by Nations, Mongolia.
The book stated that the nation of Mongolia won a total of 2 medals
( 1 silver and 1 bronze ). That was incorrect. The fact was that Mongolia
won a total of 4 medals ( 1 silver and 3 bronze ).
2. Medal Count by Nations, Uzbekistan
The book failed to mention that there was an additional nation - Uzbekistan,
which won a bronze medal.
3. Athletics Men's, 4x100 m relay, Italy.
Elsewhere in this section, there were mentions that Sejas Rodriquez
Osmel, an Italian runner, got disqualified in the 100 m, 200 m and
400 m. Also, there was a mention that the 4x100 m relay team from Italy
( Sejas Rodriguez Osmel was part of it ) placed second in the semifinals,
therefore, it was qualified to run in the finals. However, the book
did not report at all that the Italian relay team was disqualified
to run in the finals.
4. Athletics Men's, 4x400 m relay, semifinal, France.
There was a report of the names of just three runners from France. What
was the name of the fourth member of that French relay team?
5. Athletics Women's, Inna Izbash of the Ukraine.
In five various pages there were the two different surnames ( Izbah
and Izbash ) of one and same person, Inna Izbash, who was the multiple
gold medal winner in the 400 m, 400 m hurdles, 4x100 m relay and 4x400
m relay in Rome. Was it difficult for Lovett and Ammons to find out
and verify the accurate surname spelling of that Ukrainian star, who
also competed at the Deaflympic Games in 1993 and 1997?
6. Athletics Women's, Heather Lightfoot of the USA.
No question, Lovett and Ammons very well know as to who Heather Lightfoot
is and how to correctly spell her first and last names. But, in the
book her first and last names six times were misspelled such as Lifhtfoot
Heateher in the hammer throw and javelin event columns!
7. Basketball Men's.
There were 14 teams participating in the tournament in Rome. Missing
in the book were the facts that 13th and 14th place finishers in the
event were the teams from the Ukraine and Japan, respectively.
8. Table Tennis Men's, Team Men's Preliminary.
The book reported that Russia beat Korea, 3-2, and Italy, 3-0, while
Korea beat Italy, 3-0.
With a perfect win record on the printed paper, Russia, however, was
placed second, while Korea ( with one win and one loss ) was in the
first place of the Group 4. Did this scenario make a sense?
9. Swimming Men's, Terence Parkin of the Republic of South Africa.
The book had such a report:
100 m breaststroke Final A Parkin Terence RSA 1'05''13 O.R.
What do the two letters O.R. stand for? I know that O.R. is an acronym
for Olympic Record. Did Parkin break an Olympic Record for the hearing
in the Deaflympic Games in Rome? That is quite impossible! Or, has the
CISS received an official permission from the International Olympic
Committee to use such two words as Olympic Record in the deaf-related
competition?
Moreover, in the book pages I also questionably spotted three more
O.R. letters associated with Parkin's performances in the 200 m free,
200 m breaststroke and 400 m medley events in Rome.
10. Wrestling.
There was a huge oversight in the book as no mention was made in its
pages of the fact that every fourth place finisher in both Greco-Roman
and free style events also received bronze medals! 16 additional bronze
medals in these two wrestling categories ( 8 in Greco-Roman weight classes
and other 8 in free style ) were awarded in the events' site - Ostia,
a seaside town near Rome. Why did not both Lovett and Ammons, the chief
supervisors of the Rome Games, ask their own colleagues on the CISS
Executive Committee Renzo Corti of Italy and Lennart Edwall of Sweden
about the unreported 16 bronze medals awarded to the fourth place finishers?
Was there a communication foul-up between these four CISS EC members
- the English-speaking Lovett and Ammons, on the one side, and the
non-English-speaking Corti and Edwall, on the other side? For the record,
both Corti and Edwall were the distinguished dignitaries and well-visible
witnesses of the medal awarding ceremonies in Greco-Roman ( July 26,2001
) and free style ( July 30, 2001 ) in Ostia, respectively!
Now you have received the glimpse of what kind of the book both Lovett
and Ammons supervised and prepared as a gift for everyone, especially
for the future generations!
It also should be noted that in his recent President's Message for the
first E-News, Number 201 ( see www.ciss.org E-NEWS ), Lovett wrote
the two different paragraphs which were solely related to the ongoing
preparation of the Official Results book. Let me exactly quote as to
what Lovett wrote on these two paragraphs of his President's Message:
"While there ( in Rome ), I met Renzo Corti who handed me the
final draft of the final results of the 19th Deaflympic Games. I took
the draft with me to CISS Office in USA."
"I gave the final draft of the Deaflympic Games' final results
to Donalda Ammons and Tiffany Granfors with an instruction that the
results be carefully scritinised to obtain accuracy of names and performances,
etc. Once this task is completed the disk with corrected details are
to be sent to Renzo to be printed by his office and sent to all members
of the CISS. We aim for that ( the book ) to happen in middle of November
( 2001 )."
By reading the above paragraphs it became clear that Lovett was not
apparently mindful of the strict compliance of the Deaflympic Games
Rule 20 P.Who gave Lovett the lattitude with the Rule 20 P.? Who
authorized Lovett to ignore and dishonor the Rule 20 P.? Did not Lovett
want to know that, according to that Rule, the book was supposed to
be ready by November 1, 2001, not "in middle of November"
as he wrote to say that in his recent President's Message on the CISS
e-News?
Also, did Ammons and her biasedly hand-picked part-time assistant in
the CISS Home Office in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA, Miss Granfors
exactly implement the above-mentioned "instruction" by Lovett?
Or, was it just an empty and irresponsible "talk show" by
Lovett in his recent CISS e-News President's Message column? Interestingly,
unlike in the Official Games Results Books in 1997 and 1999, Lovett
did not issue his customary CISS Presidential foreword in the book
pages dedicated to the 2001 Games? Was it his clear snub toward the
FISS because Lovett and the FISS did not get along well with each other
in a number of ways before, during and after the XIXth Deaflympic Games?
With over 556 inconsistencies discovered in the book, it appears that
both Lovett and Ammons were naively behaving in such a very irresponsible
manner: as if since 2001 they both are acting as the "newcomers"
to the CISS, i.e., they are presenting themselves as the immature
novices, neglectful researchers, inept leaders, reputed rule violators
and awkward and unsophisticated supervisors!
Another major factor related to the publication of the book is that
I already received a number of complaints from the concerned individuals
about the book. They complained that this book is hard to read because
many words, sentences and numbers are very small words, sentences and
numbers in print. Thus, for those who have visual problems it will be
necessary to utilize a magnifying glass in order to clearly read the
contents of the book!
Speaking from the moneywise point of view, there are the two cardinal
questions:
1. is it worth to salariedly employ the still inexperienced amateur
and unreliable CISS Home Office assistant, Miss Granfors, who, among
the other things, was implicated with her unprofessionally-prepared
and very belatedly-published book's job performamce?
2. who will be willing to throw 20 American dollars away in order to
buy that 208-paged, 556 errors-filed and visually-hard-to-read book?
Finally, let me conclude this material on the following note.
For our international deaf sports community the start of the contemporary
21st century and new third millennium has very disappointingly been
marked in a very negative and discouraging way. In 2001, among the other
things, we witnessed the disorganization of the Games in Rome and the
highly-questionable publication of the 196-paged, 202 mistakes-filled
CISS 2001 REVIEW book. And now, in 2002, we are witnessing the poorly
and inappropriately-prepared book called 19th Deaflympic Games Rome
2001 Official Results 22th July-1th August! Very sadly and regrettfully,
the supervisors of these three major and historical projects in the
CISS were my former friends and colleagues, Lovett and Ammons, who are
one day still coveting and dreaming to receive, like Jordan did
in 1994 and 1995, the honorary doctorate degree from Gallaudet University
and the Olympic Order from the International OlympicCommittee!
( Did you know that Jerald Jordan, Lovett's and Ammons' "genial
and top-rated advisor" in the CISS, for "his outstanding and
valuable" contribution to the international sports cause was the
recipient of the honorary doctorate degree from Gallaudet University
in 1994 and the Olympic Order from the IOC in 1995? ).
In the meantime, I wish each of you to have a good time in watching
on your TV this weekend's start of the XXIVth edition of the Olympic
Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
Sportingly Yours,
Rafael Pinkhasov Pinchas
